For a while now, I’d been captivated by mesmerizing images of a crystalline lake, set against the majestic backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. So, you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon a rare Airbnb opening for Labor Day weekend right in the heart of this picturesque haven. Without a second thought, I secured our spot and eagerly counted down the days to our Garmisch-Partenkirchen adventure.
From the moment we set foot on Lake Eibsee’s shores, I was spellbound. It felt as though I’d stepped right into a cinematic masterpiece: the water’s beautiful turquoise hue, the calming landscape, and an overwhelming sense of tranquility in the air. It truly was a slice of paradise on earth.

Where is Lake Eibsee?
Nestled in the charming town of Grainau in Bayern (Bavaria), Germany, Lake Eibsee rests at the base of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. Its radiant blue-green waters set against magnificent mountains rightfully earn it the title of one of the Bavarian Alps’ crown jewels.
The mountain lake originated as a depression where the Isar-Loisach glacier once was. The Eibsee got its current shape when the western side of the Zugspitz massif broke off over 3,700 years ago causing a huge landslide. This created a beautiful natural paradise with several islands and the clear, blue-green waters that we see today.

As you can see, it would be very easy to spend the day at Lake Eibsee or even a few days. The lake is actually privately owned by the Eibsee Hotel and the hotel sits right on the lake. How convenient would it be to stay at the Eibsee Hotel? Everything would literally be at your fingertips. So much to do and see.
A Day on the Lake
Curious about how we spent our day by the lake? Here’s a little snapshot: After bidding farewell to our adorable Airbnb in Garmisch-Partenkirchen that morning, we set off to ride the Zugspitze cable car. We spent hours at the top, soaking in the panoramic views of the highest point in Germany, before eventually making our way back down.
All 4 of us were starting to get hungry for lunch so we walked over to Lake Eibsee from the Zugspitze parking lot. After a brief 5-minute walk, we found ourselves at the SeeRestaurant Eibsee Pavillion. We waited about 15 minutes for a table and found ourselves directly on the water with the unforgettable, breathtaking views of Eibsee. The food we ate there was also delicious, the staff was very kind, and we had an all-around lovely lunch on the water.
Saying Good-bye
As 4:00 p.m. approached and with a 3.5-hour journey home ahead, we had to forgo our plans of hiking or paddle boating, keeping our young adventurers’ energy levels in mind. We opted to drive back home, promising ourselves to return to enjoy more of Lake Eibsee’s beauty another day.
Our day in the Garmisch area was nothing short of magical, and I was elated to tick Lake Eibsee off my travel wishlist. We’re undoubtedly returning to this lake dubbed the “Caribbean of Germany.” With its mesmerizing turquoise hues, this is a comparison I wholeheartedly agree with. So what are you waiting for?
